Selected as recipient of the NEDO Subsidy Program for R&D Promotion for the company’s research and development of “compressors/expanders and their control systems”

September 20, 2007News Release

On August 31, 2007, Sanden Corporation’s R&D project for “compressors/expanders featuring new 2stage compressor freezing cycles” has been selected for the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)’s Grant for Application of Industrial Technology Innovation Program.

The goal of our R&D activities for compressors/expanders is in the practical application of compact compressors/expanders and of new 2stage compressor/expander freezing cycles that would optimize their functionality. This would greatly contribute to the technical challenge of improving the efficiency of CO2 freezing cycles.

More specifically, the expansion valve in the freezer cycle had been a source of energy loss, and can be improved by integrating it with the compressor and allowing reuse of its power. This cuts down the power required for the compressor and improves the freezing capacity, leading to substantial energy efficiency.
The research and development for this project will realize technology which can lead to higher efficiency of the “Eco Cute” (heat pump water heaters using CO2 refrigerants), a product line the company launched last year, as well as the improvement in energy efficiency of products such as CO2 freezer showcases and condensing units.

We have succeeded in the commercialization of the world’s first scroll-type compressors for automotive air conditioners, and have accumulated technology related to scrolls, which forms the basis of this research and development project. The R&D period for this project will be for two years from 2007 to 2008. Upon completing R&D activities, we will aim for commercialization of the products by 2010.

Sanden Corporation plans to achieve further growth through the global deployment of our business divisions, centering on businesses contributing to the environment. To realize this goal, we are in the process of redeveloping the Company’s founding site (Isesaki-shi, Gunma). A new technology development center, SGCT (Sanden Global Center of Technology), is planned for completion during the next fiscal year. This R&D project will become one of the SGCT’s major projects. We will take this opportunity of becoming a recipient of NEDO’s Subsidy Program to accelerate its practical application, so that we can contribute to the prevention of global warming and the creation of comfortable living and commercial environments.

The program subsidizes development activities for the practical application of leading technology. The program aims to foster innovation and improve the level of the country’s industrial technology through raising the efficiency in realizing the practical application of various technology seeds in university research and other outstanding cutting-edge technology seeds.
