Sanden Corporation will launch the sale of a new model of its wireless communication modem "moderno", featuring a protocol conversion function.
While existing models required the standard network protocol TCP/IP (*2) function on the communicating device for
network communications, this new model of "moderno" enables network communication for devices without a TCP/CP
function because it carries a protocol conversion function that allows the device to respond to TCP/IP simply by
connecting to it.
Modems are devices that transmit data using telephone lines, and the "moderno" uses mobile telephone networks.
Mobile telephone networks will go through a transition in 2012 to the 800MHz frequency band, and systems that operate
on modems not responding to this frequency transition cannot be used after 2012.
The "moderno", with its conversion feature, will enable the replacement of existing systems to CDMA, FOMA without
making changes to surrounding devices. Alternatively, replacing existing modems with "moderno" will enable the
continued use of existing systems after 2012 without making changes to the system.
The "moderno" can be used for improving operational efficiency and successful marketing of popular products for vending
machines through remote monitoring of sales and out-of-stock data. It can also be used to manage operations at sales
and service centers using construction equipment by controlling the overall work in progress performed or preventing
expensive construction equipment from theft by using GPS. Further rollout is planned for various applications such as in
the remote monitoring and control for gas leaks and water levels or in information management of payments using
electronic money.
The "moderno" will be available for sale from July 20, 2007 at a standard price of 52,500 yen (including taxes), with a
sales target of 10,000 units for fiscal 2007.
(*1) Protocol: Protocols are a set of rules determined for computers to communicate through networks. Computers
responding to different protocols cannot communicate with one another. Protocol conversion is a feature that enables
communication by unifying the protocols applied between systems operating different protocols.
(*2) TCP/IP: Abbreviation for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol which is the protocol commonly used in
Internet communication.
